Installation at Appellation

I spent yesterday helping my good friend Kristel Britcher install a commission she received. The piece has been installed into a purpose built ceiling inset above the dining area of Appellation, in the beautiful Barossa Valley. 

With the assistance of JamFactory's Brad Bonar, it took us about 5 1/2 hours to install all 84 hand blown glass pieces into the recess. With only a mere 1cm gap between each piece, you can imagine how careful we had to be not to bump the surrounding pieces while we hung the next one.

Though a bit hard to tell in these images, each piece is hung at intentionally different heights (each measured to hang exactly in the right spot) to create a smooth undulation from one side the other. 

After a very long and tiresome day, Kristel's piece looks beautiful.

Exhibitions and orders

Keeping up with the trend of updating once a month, I figure it is about time to show you what I have been making over the last few weeks.

After coming back to Adelaide from Canberra, it has been nice to get strait back into it all.

I had a client who bought a tumbler of mine from an exhibition at the end of last year contact me about making five more to complete his set. This was good fun, I pulled some cane and made the cups over a weekend, sent them off, and made the client v. happy.  

I also had an exhibition opening last week, Transparency which is on at jamfactory until 25 August. 

Over this past weekend I worked both days towards completing an order I received to make 36 purple Fusion tumblers. We were so productive on Saturday, that on Sunday I only had to make a few more cups and could use the rest of the session to make some different bowls. 

All in all, I have had a pretty productive few weeks!

New works - Merletto Impostato and Surge 3.2

I decided it was time (plus I have deadlines coming up) to get some proper images taken of my new work. 

The first four are of a set Merletto Impostato for an upcoming show Transparency that will be on at JamFactory from 6 July - 26 August. It is a showcase of different techniques and possibilities coming out of the JamFactory glass studio hiring community. Check out the Jam website for more info www.jamfactory.com.au    

     

These next two are of a new piece Surge 3.2 that I made while in Canberra doing my residency. I have entered it into the Ranamok Glass Prize...fingers crossed!

Residency update

Apologies for the delay in an update, but I stand by the fact that I have been busy making work.

I have now come to the end of the fifth week in my six week residency at Canberra Glassworks, and am wondering where all the time has gone? I have, however, been very busy making new product for the shop, work for an upcoming exhibition and trying out a few new things in between.

Over the first few weeks i worked on a new jug idea - not into pruduction quite yet, but gives me something to go from.

The first two weeks was mainly spent doing prep work - pulling lots of cane and getting ready to make some pieces.

This is the beggining of a set of functional pieces i will be exhibiting as part of the Sala festival in Adelaide this year in a show on at JamFactory.

In between the time i spent pulling fancy cane for the exhibition, i worked on a new product range i had an idea for, using white cane with transparent chips on the outside.

The results, so far, being some hemisphere bowls and some vases - both currently available from the Canberra Glassworks shop!

I have also had some time to explore some more extensive exhibition work, with multi-layered incalmos and merletto cane.

TFAiR week one

One week into my residency at Canberra Glassworks - no action shots as of yet, but to give you an idea of the things I have been making/intend on making, here are a few shots of my workspace and cane that I have pulled over the first week.

It has begun! 

I have just commenced my Thomas Foundation Artist in Residence at Canberra Glassworks in Kingston, ACT.

Throughout the residency I will be working on a number of different things. First up, I'm going to be pulling a bunch of cane for some new product ideas I have, as well as some more extensive exhibition pieces. 

Over the six weeks I am spending here, I am hoping to experiment with a few new ideas, as well as extend on old ones.

The residency is from now until 27 May. Most weeks i will be blowing glass Wednesday mornings 8-12, Thursday afternoons 12:30-4:30 and Saturday mornings.

New pipes

Something to boast about!
The new pipes i ordered arrived the other day from Spiral Arts. They are totally sweet! and oh what a luxury it is to use pipes that are actually straight :)
These babies will pretty much make the work themselves!

On somewhat of a segway...the investment into new pipes can only be made possible by selling work, so luckily, today I packed up a bunch of new work to send off to Canberra Glassworks and Sturt Gallery.
